~Jess~
“Eventually,” Nick said, running his hand through his hair and letting out a long, slow breath. “I think that’s where we’re headed.”
They were at CR again, late after everyone had left, a couple of months past that strange night at her apartment where Nick had hinted that he wanted more than just friendship with her and Jess had been resistant.
Why had she been resistant? She asked herself the question again as Nick looked over at her and smiled. “It’s a good idea, you know?”
A service project. A way for the members of CR to get out into the community and do some good. An opportunity for them all to grow, together. She’d gotten the idea during her small group, when Brenda had mentioned the women’s shelter she’d been staying at, how they were having some building issues but didn’t have any of the funds to handle any of the repairs that would soon be sorely needed. Jess had brought the idea straight to Nick.
“I thought it was,” she said.
“The cost of supplies, though,” he said. “We’re already running a tight budget around here. It would be a struggle to finance it, you know.”
Struggle. She knew all about struggles and was reminded of her own personal struggles (just the one, mainly) as Nick stretched his neck from side to side, closing his eyes as he did so. Something about that move showcased muscles that she’d been noticing more and more lately…
Struggles. Or struggle, like she’d already thought.
It had been a struggle for a long time, long before the day that she was baptized. That day, however, had been the worst of it.
She’d not let Nick know that she was getting baptized. It wasn’t that she’d hidden it from him – she honestly just wanted it to be a surprise, the culmination of all that they’d talked about and the way that he’d encouraged her.
He had played a big part in her coming to Christ in this new season, and she had been so eager to have him share her joy in this in the moment.
So she’d gotten ready for the baptism and had stayed up in the baptistry. She’d grown up at the church and had been up there many times over the years on errands for her father, so she knew just where the nooks and crannies were where she could wait. She’d decided that she would tell Nick right before, just before he went down into the water, and once she heard him upstairs, she’d come out, already dressed and ready to go, ready to say hello to him, then stopping short as she’d seen him pulling off his shirt.
Bow-chicka-bow-wow. All slow motion like that. And in the baptistry, no less, which made her feel all kinds of creepy and wrong for staring at him, her mouth gaping open. She’d started backing away silently…
… but hadn’t been able to keep from admiring what she couldn’t help but see.
Nick was built. All that time he spent working with his hands had done unspeakably wonderful things for his torso as well.
